Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani has announced that the mission of the international coalition forces in Iraq will officially end in September 2026. The move comes as part of efforts to strengthen Iraq’s sovereignty and security capabilities.

Speaking on Wednesday, Sudani emphasized that Iraq is moving forward with several strategic defense contracts. "We have signed contracts to build air defense systems and ensure the safety of our airspace,” he said, describing the agreements as vital for protecting Iraqi skies and national security.

Sudani stressed that Iraq remains committed to a policy of balanced diplomacy in the region. "We rely on calm and constructive diplomacy, and we share any threats with our partners and friends,” he stated, adding, "But we will never allow any compromise of our sovereignty.”

Highlighting Iraq’s diplomatic stance, the Prime Minister noted that Baghdad maintains good relations with both the United States and Iran. He revealed that two rounds of strategic dialogue have already taken place with Washington and that preparations are underway for a third session.

The Prime Minister also framed Iraq’s upcoming elections as a reaffirmation of the country’s democratic path, calling them "an important message internally and internationally.”

The announcement signals Iraq’s growing emphasis on self-reliance in national defense, as the country prepares for a post-coalition security landscape.
